The 7-Email Sequence That Converts Cold Leads into Affiliate Buyers

My exact MailerLite sequence structure: subject lines, timing, and the affiliate CTAs that earn commissions.

Social media algorithms can bury your content overnight. Affiliate platforms change their commission rates without notice. But an email list you built and own? No algorithm controls who sees it. That's the asymmetric advantage that makes email the highest-ROI channel in my affiliate marketing stack.

Most welcome sequences fail for the same reason: they sell before they've earned it. A subscriber who just gave you their email address is curious, not committed. The job of a welcome sequence is to earn the right to make an offer — by delivering value first, consistently, before a single affiliate link appears.

Here's the exact 7-email sequence I run through MailerLite for every new subscriber who comes in through my Pinterest traffic system.

Why 7 Emails, and Why That Timing

Seven emails over 15 days is long enough to build genuine trust, short enough to stay in the memory of someone who just discovered you. The timing is front-loaded: emails 1–4 come within the first week, while the subscriber's motivation is highest. Emails 5–7 are spaced out to avoid fatigue while keeping the momentum.

The affiliate links appear for the first time in Email 3 — after two emails that delivered pure value with no ask. By that point, the subscriber has read two useful emails and trusts that more is coming. The tool recommendation in Email 3 lands as a suggestion from someone they're starting to trust, not a cold pitch.

The Welcome + Delivery

Deliver the lead magnet immediately. Keep it short — 3 paragraphs max. Introduce who you are in one sentence. Set the expectation: what they'll receive over the next two weeks. No affiliate links in this email. The only job is delivery and expectation-setting.

The Story Email

Share a specific, honest story — a workflow you changed, a mistake you made, a result that surprised you. This email is the trust-builder. Authenticity here is more valuable than polish. Still no affiliate links — the story just has to be real and relevant to the subscriber's goals.

First Tool Recommendation (Surfer SEO)

Frame this as the tool you use before writing a single word. Walk through one specific use case. Be concrete — tell them exactly what to do with it on day one. One affiliate link, placed naturally in the body, with a clear CTA. This is where the sequence starts earning.

The Mistake Email (KoalaWriter)

Lead with a mistake you made — the long way you used to do content production. Then pivot to the shortcut: KoalaWriter. The vulnerability framing makes the tool recommendation feel earned, not pushed. Include the affiliate link after the story beats, never before.

The Comparison (Jasper vs. KoalaWriter)

Direct comparison content performs well because subscribers are actively evaluating tools. Give an honest breakdown of when to use each one. Two affiliate links here — one for each tool — and a clear recommendation based on the subscriber's likely use case.

The Setup Email (ConvertKit)

Walk them through the ConvertKit setup most people get wrong — the segmentation and automation structure that separates a list from a system. This positions ConvertKit as the distribution layer for everything they've just learned to build. Affiliate link with a free-tier callout for lower friction.

The Activation Email

Close the sequence with a forward-looking frame: the 30-day content plan. Give them a concrete action to take this week. Include a survey link to segment them by focus (Pinterest traffic, SEO content, or email). The segmentation feeds into which sequence they enter next.

The Segmentation That Multiplies ROI

The survey in Email 7 is not optional. Sending the same affiliate offers to every subscriber regardless of their interest produces mediocre results. Sending Pinterest-focused affiliate links to Pinterest-focused subscribers — and email-focused offers to email-focused subscribers — produces 2–3x higher click rates on the same list.

Open Rate and Click Rate Benchmarks

For cold Pinterest traffic, I target 45–55% open rates on emails 1–3 and 35–45% on emails 4–7. Click rates on affiliate links range from 6–14% depending on how well the email frames the tool before the link appears. Email 5 (the comparison) consistently outperforms all others on raw affiliate click volume.
